Sunderland Mountaineering Club (SMC) is a small sociable group which was formed in the 1960s and is based in Sunderland, though we also have members living in Scotland, Derbyshire and Wales!

Members vary in age and ability and come from a wide range of backgrounds, we are brought together by our enthusiasm for the outdoors.
Activities include walking, scrambling, climbing and biking (and even wild swimming on occasion!) and our members have a wealth of experience gained in the UK, the Alps, The Himalayas and South America. The club is affiliated to The British Mountaineering Council.
We are a friendly club whose activities centre around weekends away, usually in dedicated mountaineering huts. Some weekends are also spent camping, and we have use of a private campsite in the Lake District. Occasionally we have longer trips away and/or trips abroad. In addition there are regular climbing nights either at an indoor wall or at a local crag.
We have a weekly social night at The Rosedene in Sunderland where potential new members are welcome. See New Members Page for more details. Other social events are arranged periodically throughout the year, including a Christmas night out, and the club's annual dinner in Spring
